Family history

Rowland Swallow was born in 1899 at North Muskham, he was the son of Richard William a carpenter and Emma Swallow née Blackbourne of Claypole Newark Nottinghamshire and the brother of Emily, Reginald and Arthur Septimus Swallow.

His father Richard William was born in 1875 at Cromwell, Newark, his mother Emma Blackbourne was born in 1872 at Thornton on the Hill, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have 5 children,sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Claypole near Newark, Richard William 36 yrs is a carpenter, he is living with his wife Emma 39 yrs and their children, Emily 15 yrs helping at home, Rowland 12 yrs a schaolr, Reginald 3 yrs and Arthru Septimus 5 months old.

Military history

Private Rowland Swallow enlisted at Newark, he initially served with the service number 4000 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later trasnferring to the 47 company Machine Gun Corps , he was reported missing on 23rd March 1918 but was not confirmed dead until 12th May 1919, he is buried at Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension
