Jesse Llewellyn Stephens was born in 1893 at Chepstow, he was the son of James a domestic gardener and Maria (Mary Ann) Stephens née Davis of Brook Cottages, Itton, Chepstow.

His father James was born in 1857 at Mounton, Monmoutshire, his mother Maria Davis was born in 1856 at Bath, Somerset, they were married in 1889 at Chepstow, they had 4 children their other children were James b1886 and Ethel b1889 and John born 1892 all were born in Monmouthshire.

In the 1901 census the family are living at Pandy Mill, Itton, Chepstow, James 42 yrs is a domestic gardener he is living with hs wife Maria 45 yrs and their children, James 15 yrs a cater on a farm, John 9 yrs, Jessie 7 yrs

Military history

Private Jesse Stephens enlisted at West Bridgford, whilst residing at Widmerpool, Nottinghamshire, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th September 1917 in France, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Memorial.
