Family history

Sydney Robert Snell was born in 1888 at Gainsborough, he was the son of Richard a farm foreman and Elizabeth Snell, née Burrows of Laughterton, Lincolnshire.

His father Richard was born in 1859 at Lincoln his mother Elizabeth Burrows was born in 1862 at Gainsborough, they were married on 6th October 1879 their mariage was recorded in the Lincoln registration district, they went on to have 15 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Kettlethorpe, Lincolnshire, Richard 51 yrs is a farm foreman he is living with his wife Elizabeth 49 yrsd and 7 of their children.

In the same 1911 census, Sydney has left the family home, he is in service at Heslington Hall, Yorkshire, he is 22 yrs of age and a domestic footman, he is one of many servants working for Albert Bateson (3rd Baron Deramore) 45 yrs

Sydney was the husband of Mary Ann Wilkinson (formerly Snell), née Gilbert (born 14th May 1885)they were married in 1915 at Gainsborough, they lived at 4 Albert Terrace, Albert Street,Ventnor, Isle of Wight they had a daughter Phyllis Mary born 18th April 1916.

Commencing 20th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private Sydney Robert Snell enlisted at Forfar whilst residing at Newark he served with the 1st Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers, he died on 26th September 1917, he is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium
