William Edward Evan Smith was born in 1876 at Caistor, he was the son of Henry Evan Smith a house painter and decorator, and Maria Smith née Sharman,

His father Henry Evan Smith was born in 1828 at Caistor his mother Maria Sharman was born in 1830 at Lincoln they were married in 1851 at Lincoln , they went on to have at least 8 children.

In the 1911 census William and his siblings are living at Rose Cottage, Nettleton Terrace, Fountain Street, Castor, William Edward Evan 34 yrs is head of the household, he is a house painter he is living with his brother Robert Arthur Evan Smith 51 yrs ahouse painter and his siter Maria Sharcross Evans Smith 43 yrs a house keeper.

Military history

Private William Edward Evan Smih enlisted at Caistor, Lincolnshire whilst residing at Newark he initially served with the service number 155418 in the Royal Engineers, he later transferred to the 19th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 23rd December 1917 in France, he is buried at Burr Cross Roads, Cemetery, Belgium.
