Family history

James Smith was born in 1890 at Balderton, he was the son of Robert Atherton Smith a farm labourer and second wife Rosamond Smith, née Bugg of Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire;

His father Robert Atherton was born in 1853 at Newark, he married his first wife Mary Fell born 1863 at Newark she died in 1887 at Newark, she was 24 yrs old, they were married in 1883 at Newark, they had 3 children, Elizabeth Ann b1884, Joseph born 1885 and Mary b1887.

Following the death of his first wife Mary he went on to marry his second wife Rosamond Bugg (born 1867 at Claypole they were married in 1888 at Newark, they went on to have 11 children,

In the 1911 census the family are living at Egmanton, Robert Smith 58 yrs is an agricultural labourer, he is living with his second wife, Rosamond 44 yrs and their children, William 17 yrs a railway plant labourer, Loise 13 yrs, Ruth 11 yrs, Daisy 9 yrs Jack 6 yrs and Claude 4 yrs and Bertha 2 yrs of age.

James was the husband Of Florence Spencer (born 31st July 1881) they were married in 1914, their marriage was recorded at the Basford registration district, they lived at 5, Church Walk, Woodborough, Nottingham and had two children, Dennis Robert born 21st May 1914 and Lois Margaret born 9th January 1916.

Commencing 3rd June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private James Smith enlisted at Newark, whilst residing at Kirklington, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 27th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on theTyne Cot Memorial.
