Family history

James Slater was baptised on 12th August 1883 at Aderley, Cheshire, he was the son of Charles Slater a general labourer and his first wife Mary Emma Slater née Johnson of Nether Alderley, Cheshire,

His father Charles Slater was born in 1859 at Alderley, Cheshire, his mother Mary Emma Johnson was born in 1862 at Snelston, Cheshire, she died in 1902 aged 40 yrs, they were married on 28th December 1878 at Macclesfield, Cheshire, they went on to have 7 children.

His father remarried in 1905 at Macclesfield , Mary Emma Heath born 1873 at Withinson, Cheshire.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at Nether Alderley, Cheshire, Charles 51 yrs is an odd job man/labourer, he is living with his second wife Mary Emma 38 yrs and his son Charles Ernest 15 yrs of age.

James married Matilda Tigwell (born 16th March 1883) on 5th November 1907 at Wokingham, Berkshire, they lived at the Cottage, Gamston House, Retford, they went on to have the following children, Rose Emma born 6th August 1908, Winifred Sarah born 7th September 1910, Charles James born 9th September 1912 and James Ernest born 24th March 1915.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 99 Kings Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, James 29 yrs is a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Matilda 28 yrs and their children Rose Emma 2 yrs and Winifred Sarah 6 months of age.

Commencing 2nd August 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private James Slater enlisted at Sandown Park, Hampshire whilst residing at Retford, he served wit the 2nd battalion Scots Guards, he was killed in action on 18th December 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
