Family history

Charles Leonard Sheppard was born in Ollerton in 1895 he was baptised on 8th September 1895 at St Giles Church, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire he was the son of the late Frederick Sheppard a butcher and Selina Annie Sims.

His father Frederick was born in 1866 at Gonalston, he died in 1903 at Boston, Lincolnshire. his mother Selina Annie Sims was born in 1866 at Coddington, they were maried in 1886 at Newark. they went on to have 5 children.

Following his fathers death his mother went on to remarry on 3rd March 1904 at Chrischurch, Newark to Harry Skillington born 1866 at Newark, they went on to have 2 children,

In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Fox Street, Annesley Woodhouse, Harry Skillington 45 yrs is a coal miner banks man, he is living with his wife Selina Skillington 44 yrs and their children, Leonard Sheppard 15 a coal miner pony driver, Harry Sheppard 14 yrs a coal miner coal sorter,Ernest Sheppard 9 yrs a scholar, May Skillington 6 yrs a scholar and Frank Skillington 2 yrs of age.

His mother Selia Annie Skillington, later lived at The Cock Inn, Old Balderton, Newark, Notts and later 18 Cockpit Hill, Morledge, Derby

Military history

Private Charles Leonard Sheppard enlisted on 15th August 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 19 yrs and 35 days, he was acoal miner hewer. he was discharged on 23rd October 1914, unlikely to become an efficient soldier.

He either re enlisted or was called up for service as we find him serving with the 16th battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

He was discharged from the Army on 5th January 1919 suffering from Gastritis and died on 28th November 1920, of disease he is buried at Derby (Nottingham Road) Cemetery
