Family history

John Thomas Senescall known as 'Tom' was born in 1887 at South Stoke, Lincolnshire he was baptised on 25th March 1877 at Stoke South, he was the son of the late John an agricultural labourer and Jane Sensescall néé Pordham, of Retford, Nottingamshire.

His father John was born in 1834 at Grantham, he died in 1906 at Grnatham aged 70 yrs, his mother Jane Pordham was born in 1846 at Woolsthope, Lincolnshire, they were married on 22nd November 1865 at Colsterworth, Grantham they went on to have 9 children,

In the 1911 census the family are living at Old Park Wood Cottages, South Stone, John 67 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Jane 55 yrs and their chidren, John Thomas 24 yrs a labourer on a farm and Ethel 17 yrs an assistant teacher.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 14 Saville Street, Retford, she is Jane Senescall 66 yrs a widow and house keeper, she is living with her sons John Thomas 33 yrs single a farm labourer and son Harry 29 yrs single a painter and paper hanger, they are living with Ethel Rowson, head of the family a widow 27 yrs a schoolmistress and her daughter Gladys Rowson 3 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Tom Senescall enlisted at Worksop whilst residing at Retford, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
