Family history

Fred Sawyer was born in 1884 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, he was the son of John Sawyer a farm labourer, and Ann Rebecca Sawyer née Johnson of Nettleham, Lincolnshire,

His father John was born in 1853 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, his mother Ann Rebecca Johnson was born in 1856 at Metheringham, Lincolnshire, they were married on 1st August 1880 at Nettleham, they had 5 children.

In the 1911 census his family are living at Nettleham, John 58 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Ann Rebecca 53 yrs and their daughter Constance Sawyer 13 yrs a scholar and their grandson John Sawyer 2 yrs 9 months

Husband Of Maud Mary Howard (Formerly Sawyer),née Riley (born 25th September 1888 ) of Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire.they were married on 19th May 1910 at the parish church at Bleasby, they had the following children, Albert born 19th May 1910, Frederick born 10th June 1911 and William born 25th December 1915.

In the 1911 census Fred Sawyer is living with his family at his in laws address at Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire, he is shown as Fred Sawyer 25 yrs a general labourer he is son in law, he is living with his wife Maude Mary Sawyer 21 yrs and their children, Albert 10 months and George Riley 69 yrs a general carter and Mary Riley 60 yrs

Commencing 5th May 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.

Military history

Private Fred Sawyer enlisted on 11th December 1915, giving his address as 2 Hawarden Terrace, Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham he was 31 yrs old and was a horseman hIs next of kin was his wife Maud Mary of the same address, he was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war 10th January 1917 he was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 2nd April 1917 disembarking at Bombay on 26th June 1917, He reembarked at Bombay on 9th August 1917, disembarking at Basra on 15th August 1917. He was reported missing later killed in action on 26th August 1918, his name is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial, Iran.
