Thomas William Rushby was born in 1879 at Sheffield, he was the son of Richard Rushby a farm labourer and the late Elizabeth Hazard Rushby née Templeman of Flintham village, Nottinghamshire.
His father Richard was born in 1857 at Egmanton, his mother Elizabeth Hazard Templeman was born in 1848 at Knesall she died in 1915 aged 67 yrs, they were married in 1867 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Flintham village, Richard 59 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Hazard 65 yrs and their children, Arthur 29 yrs a farm labourer, John 23 yr a farm labourer and Walter 20 yrs a farm labourer.
Thomas William Rushby married Ellen Bryan (born 26th June 1885 at Coddington) in 1902 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district, they lived at Top Green, Sibthorpe near Newark, they had the following children, Elizabeth Ellen born 9th February 1903, Thomas William born 18th April 1904, Benjamin born 21st April 1906, Frank born 9th May 1908, May born 13t July 1910, Maggie born 31st January 1912, Joshua born 16th June 1914 and Pollie born 23rd October 1916.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Elston village, Nottinghamshire, Thomas William 35 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 26 yrs and their children, Ellen Elizabeth 8 yrs, Thomas William 6 yrs, Benjamin 4 yrs, Joshua 2 yrs and May 9 months old.
Private William Thomas Rushby enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Sibthrope, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
