Cecil Ross was born in 1891 at Grantham, he was the son of John Dexter Ross a farm labourer and Emma Ross née Bell of Claypole, Lincolnshire.
His father John Dexter Ross was born in 1848 at Scopwick, Lincolnshire, his mother Emma Bell was born in 1850 at Horncatle, Lincolnshire, they were married on 23rd July 1874 at Lincoln, they went on to have 8 children.
In the 1911 census his parents are living at Claypole, John Dexter Ross is 63 yrs and a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Emma 61 yrs and their son William Darby Ross 27 yrs a farm labourer.
In the same 1911 census Cecil has left the family home, he is living at Hallaton, Upingham, he is shown as beinbg 20 yrs a grocers assistant, he is boarding with Samuel Kilbourne 43 yrs a groom.
Private Cecil Ross enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Claypole, he served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regimet, he landed in France on 13th August 1914, he was killed in action on 24th August 1914 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the La Ferte Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
