he was a railway porter in the 1911 census and upon enlistemnt he was a railway signalman.

Family history

John Henry Prentice (junior) was born in 1891 at Holton-cum-Beckering, Lincolnshire, he wa the son of John Henry Prentice (senior) a blacksmith and Ann Prentice née Freeman.

His father John Henry Prentice (senior) was born in 1860 at Skillington, Lincolnshire, his mother Ann Freeman was born in 1849 at Minting, Lincolnshire, they were married on 9th June 1890 at Holton-cum Beckering, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 3 children, Walter born 1893 and Percy born 1896.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 82 Station Road, Carlton, John Henry Prentice (senior) 51 yrs a blacksmith is living with his wife Ann 61 yrs and their children, John Henry 20 yrs a railway porter, Percy 15 yrs a green grocer also living with them is Harriett Prentice 85 yrs a widow, and mother.

Military history

Company Quartermaster Sergeant John Henry Prentice enlisted at Dewsbury, on 3rd September 1914, he was 23 yrs and 160 days old, he was signalman, he was posted to the 9th battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 12th October 1914, Corporal 6th December 1914 and to Sergeant on 22nd February 1915. He landed in France on 27th August 1915, he died of wounds on 8th Octobe 1915 he is buried at Erquinghem-Lys Church yard Extension, France.
