Family history

Walter Parkin was born in 1897 at Ordsall, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of James a domestic groom, and Ann Parkin née Nicholson of Grove Lodge, Retford Nottinghamshire.

His father James was born in 1858 at Oldcoates, Nottinghanshire, his mother Ann Nichoson was born in 1862 at Bothamsall, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1889 at Worksop, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Grove Lodge, Retford, James 53 yrs is a domestic groom, he is living with his wife Ann 49 yrs and their children, James William 20 yrs a vulcanist, Walter 14 yrs a farm lad and Ethel 11 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Walter Parkin enlisted at Rotherham on 13th June 1916, he was 19 yrs and 7 months of age and was a shepherd, giving his address as 32 Sheffield Road, South Anston, Sheffield his next of kin was his father James of Grove Lodge, Retford he was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment, he embarked from Folkstone on 11th October 1916. On 23rd October 1916 he was transferred to the 14th battalion Durham Light Infantry.

He was killed in action on 10th December 1916, he is buried at Cambrin Churchyard Extension
