Frank James Orr was born in 1899 his birth was registered in the Bingham registration district, he was the son of John a farm cowman and Annie Orr née Harris and the brother of John Francis (killed in action 2/10/1917), Charlotte, George William, Daisy Evelyn and Annie Elizabeth Orr.

His father John was born in 1869 at Walthan on the Wolds Leicestershire his mother Annie Harris was born in 1879 at Bingham, it has not been possible to find a marriage for John and Annie, (however on the 1911 census they have been maaried for 15 yrs (1896)

In the 1901 census the family are living at Long Acre, John Orr 30 yrs a brick layers labourer is living with Ann Harris 22 yrs a house keeper and his daughter Dorothy Orr 5 yrs of age.

In the 1911 census the family are still living at Long Acre Bingham Nottinghamshire. John 40 yrs is a farm cowman, living with his wife Annie Orr 32 yrs and their children, John Franis 14 yrs, Frank James 11 yrs Charlotte 4 yrs, George William 2 yrs and Daisy Evelyn 4 moths and Annie Elizabeth 4 months old. John states that they have been married for 15 yrs and have had 7 children, 1 of whom died in infancy or early childhood.

Military history

Private Frank James Orr enlisted at Hucknall, Nottingham giving his address as 1 Moor Bridge Cottages, Bestwood, Nottingham, his age was 19 yrs and 300 days, he was a hammer man, his next of kin was his father John of the same address, he was posted to the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment.He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Soome,

His brother Private John Francis Orr enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell he served with the 8th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd October 1917, he is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery
