Joseph Colin Mirfin known as Colin was born in 1895 at Sheffield, he was the son of Joseph a manager at a spring making works and Florence Mary Mirfin née Brooks, of Rampton Retford Nottinghamshire.
His father Joseph was born in 1863 at Attercliffe, Sheffield, his mother Florence Mary Brooks was born in 1869 at Sheffield, they were married on 16th April 1892 at Holy Trinity Church, Darnall, Sheffield, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1901 census the family are living at 34 Darnall Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield, Joseph 37 yrs a manager at a spring making works is living with his wife Florence 32 yrs and their 4 children.
In the 1911 census Joseph Colin Mirfin 16 years is head of the family and is living at 110 Colinshaw Road, Sheffield, he is a scholar, he is living with his siblings, Samuel 18 yrs no occupation listed, John Lawrence 13 yrs a scholar, Florence Margaret 11 yrs a scholar, Beatrice Dorothy 7 yrs of age, also living with them is is a servant Hannah Ridgeway 25 yrs a general domestic servant.
Second Lieutenant Colin Mirfin enlisted and served with the 6th battalion York and Lancster Regiment, his first theatre of war was Egypt where he landed on 14th November 1915, he died of wounds in England and is buried at Ecclesall All Saints Churchyard,
His brother Private 203920 served with the John Lawrence served with the 1/5th Battalion, Yorks and Lancashire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th October 1917 having no grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
He is not recorded on the Nottinghamshire Roll of honour as he has no direct connection with the county.
