Thomas George Mellish was born in 1819 at Thrope Salvin, Yorkshire, he was the son of George Thorpe Mellish a farm labourer and Maria Mellish née Saxton of Thorpe Salvin, Worksop, Notts.

His father George Thorpe was born in 1855 at Holbeck Nottinghamshire, his mother Maria Saxton was born in 1866 at Worksop, they were maried on 3rd January 1887 at St Marys Prior church, Worksop, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Thorpe Salvin, Worksop, George Thorpe 56 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Maria 46 yrs and their children, George Thomas 18 yrs a farm labourer, Walter 17 yrs a farm labourer, ilfred 14 yrs a farm labourer, Sidney 8 yrs a scholar and Edith 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Thomas George Mellish enlisted at Rotherham, he initially served with the service number 268954 inthe West Riding Regiment, he later transferred to the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light infantry, he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial
