Family history

Alfred Guy Masters, known as 'Fred' was born in 1887 at South Normanton, he was the son of head gardner James Caleb and Annie Masters née Lenton of 1 Blake Street, Ilkeston.

His father James Caleb Masters was born in 1845 at Bromyard, Herefordshire, his mother Annie Lenton was born in 1852 also at Bromyard, they were married on 11th August 1871 at St Marys Church, Huntingdon, the couple had 9 children, sadly two were to die n infancy or early childhood.

In 1911 they lived at 2 Station Road Ilkeston Junction, James Caleb 65 yrs is a head gardener, he is living with his wife Annie 58 yrs and their children, Alfred Guy Masters 23 yrs a clothiers assistant, Eva Emily Mary 20 yrs a hosiery factory worker, also living with the family are 4 grand daughters.

Alfred married Amelia Roberts (born 29th January 1888 Ilkeston, Derbyshire), they were married on 10th October 1912 at at St Catherines church at Cossall Nottinghamshire.

In 1921 Amelia was living at 13 Station Road Ilkeston later moving to 22 Manley Appartments Bakersfield California and subsequently to 2160A Howard Street San Francisco California.

Military history

He attested at Doncaster aged 28 years and 1 month on 11th December 1915, probably under Lord Derby's Scheme. His address was 26 Oswin Avenue Balby Doncaster, he was aa shop assistant, He was posted to the army Reserve on 12th December 1915, and was finally mobilised on 1st June 1916 and posted to 48th Anti Aircraft Section Royal Garrison Artillery On 11th September 1916 whilst serving at Darlington he died from pneumonia at the 2nd Western Military Hospital Princess Street Manchester he is buried at St Catherines Churchyard, Cossall.
