Family history

Elisha Makinson (junior) was born in 1886 at Sheffield he was the son of Eliha Makinson (senior) and Mary Ann Makinson née Briggs.

His father Elisha Makinson (senior) was born in 1864 at Eccleshall Bierlow, Shefield, he died in 1899 at Bakewell he was 35 yrs old, his mother Mary Ann Briggs was born in 1867 at Sheffield, they were married in 1889 at Sheffield, they had 2 further children, Isaac born 1885 Sheffield and Harry born 1889 at Sheffield.

In the 1911 census Elisha Makinson (junior) 25 yrs and a bricklayer has left the family home he is boarding at Almondery, Huddersfield, he is boarding with George Henry Woodhouse 48 yrs a builders contractor and his wife .

Elisha (junior) married his wife Hilda Smith (born 8th March 1891) on 10th August 1913 at St Matthews Church, Sheffield, and they lived at 20, Salisbury Rd., Crookes, Sheffield and later at Eaton Hall near Retford.

Commencing 1st October 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Sapper Elisha Makinson enlisted in Sheffield, he was residing in East Retford at the time, he served with 459th Field Coy, Royal Engineers and landed in France on 10th October 1915. He was killed in action on 16th March 1917 and is buried in Philosophie British Cemetery.
