Private William Lewis enlisted at Retford whilst residing at Bilby he initially served with the service number 23224 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment), he was serving with the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 5th November 1916 and is buried at Bancourt British Cemetery, France.
