Family history

Ernest Knott was born in 1891 at Edmonthorpe, Rutland,he was the son of the late George Thomas Knott a railway platelayrer and Emma Mary Knott née Tuck of Stapleford Park, Melton Mowbray,

His father George Thomas was born in 1856 at Edmonthorpe, he died in 1909 he was 53 yrs of age, his mother Emma Mary Tuck was born in 1860 at Bury ST Edmunds, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district. they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood,

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Emma Mary Knott 51 yrs a caretaker is living at Wymondham, Oakham, she is living with her children, Lily Knott 13 yrs a scholar and George Robert Knott 10 ys a scholar.

In the same 1911 census we find that Ernest has left the family home, he is living at Arhdeaconrey Precinct, Peterborough, he is shown as being 21 yrs a servant, he is living with Francis Henry Thickness 81 yrs a bishop.

His mother went on to remarry in 1912 at Melton Mowbray to William Henry Finch, of Stapleford Park, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

Military history

Sergeant Ernest Knott enlisted at Oakham,Rutland on 5th September 1914, he was 23 yrs and 226 days, he was a footman, he was posted to the 9th battalion Leicestershire Regiment who he joined on 11th September 1914 at Leicester. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 4th January 1915 and to Corporal on 15th February 1915, and he landed in France on 29th July 1915 and was promotoed to Sergeant on 27th November 1915. He was killed in action on 14th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme,
