Oswald Whyndham James was born in 1900 at Sheffield, he was the son of Lewis a foreman steel smelter, and Annie James née Farnsworth and the brother of Elizabeth, Lewis, Louise, Fred and Wilfred James. of the Old Vicarage East Drayton Retford Nottinghamshire.

His father Lewis was born in 1861 at Abertillery, Monmouthshire, his mother Annie Farnsworth was born in 1873 at Norton, Sheffiled, they were married on 6th April 1896 at Upper Langwith, Derbyshire, they went on to have 5 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1901 census they lived in Sheffield (Brightside Bierlow)

In the 1911 census the family lived at 656 Grimesthorpe Road Sheffield. Lewis 50 yrs is a foreman steel smelter, he is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their children Lewis John 21 yrs a pattern maker, Frederick James 13 yrs a scholar, Whyndham James 10 yrs a scholar, and Wilfred James 1 year of age, also living with the family is female servant.

Military history

'Sapper Oswald Whyndham James enlisted and served with D' Coy Depot, Royal Engineers,
he died from illness, influenza on 12th March 1919 at Fort Pitt Military Hospital Chatham he is bured at St Peters East Drayton Churchyard.
