Private Harry Alfred Hughes was born in 1879, at Wolverhampton he was the son of William Hughes, a tailor of Wolverhampton and Emma Jane Hughes née Gates
His father William was born in 1846 in Whitchurch Shropshire, his mother Emma Janes Gates was born in 1851 at Wolverhampton, she died in 1887 at Wolverhampton she was 36 yrs old, they were married in 1870 at Wolverhampton they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census his widowed father William 64 yrs a tailor is living at Lockley Wood, Hinstock, Market Drayton he is living with Ann Hughes 85 yrs a widow his mother
Harry was the husband of Margaret Hughes,néé Tappin, of Dairy Cottage, Strelley Hall, Nottingham they were married on 24th December 1912 at Christ Church, Ellesmere Port,Chester, Harry was 33 yrs of age a bachelor and a porter, living at 84 Grace Road, Ellesmere Port, his father was William a tailor, he married Margaret Tappin 33 yrs a spinster, of English Frankton, Ellesmere, Salop her father was Thomas Tappin retired.
Private Harry Alfred Hughes enlisted at Nottingam on 7th December 1915, giving his age as 37 yrs and 250 days born in Wolverhampton, he was a yardman he was posted to the Army Ordnance Corps., He was discharged from the Army on 22nd June 1919 as being no longer physically fit for war service. He died of a carcinoma of the lungs and groin, on 17th June 19120, he is buried in Strelley (All Saints) Churchyard, Nottingham.
He was issued with a silver war badge no 464842, giving his service dates as enlisting on 7th December 1915 and discharge as 22nd June 1919, he was discharged due to sickness, he had served overseas.
