Joseph Hopkins was born on 21st November 1886 at Long Eaton, he was the son of George a domestic coachman and Hannah Hopkins née Speed, of Hill Lodge East Bridgford Nottinghamshire.
His father George was born in 1860 at Upper Broughton, Nottinghamshire, his mother Hannah Speed was born in 1860 at Hickling, Nottinghamshire, they were married on 25th December 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, they went on ot have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or earley childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Starch Lane, Bramcote, Nottingham George 50 yrs is a domestic coachman he is living with his wife Hannah 50 yrs and their children, Walter 19 yrs single and a lace maker, and Frank 17 yrs a lace maker.
Joseph married Rose Anabella Stevenson (born 3rd January 1889 Long Eaton) they were married in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration districtt, they lived at 17 Maxwell Street, Long Eaton, they had a son Reginald born 21st September 1911.
In the 1911 census Joseph is living at 2 Michael Street, Long Eaton, he is 24 yrs and is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Rose 23 yrs.
Commencing 2nd May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
His widow late lived at 22 Kirkwhite Avenue Long Eaton.
Private Joseph Hopkins enlisted and served with the 1st battalion Royal Marines Battalion, Royal Naval Division, he was killed in action on 26th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
