Family history

Arthur Hope was born in 1880 at Kilburn, Derbyshire, he was the son of the late Joseph Hope a blacksmith and the late Frances Hope néé Payne of Kilburn.

His father Joseph was born in 1842 at Kilburn, he died in 1919 aged 77 yrs, his mother Frances Payne was born in 1839 at Belper she died in 1896 aged aged 57 yrs, they were married on 27th May 1861 at Duffield, Derbyshire, they went on to have 11 children.

In the 1911 census his widowed father Joseph 69 yrs is living at Charlesworth Street, Bolsover with his married son Walter Hope 33 yrs a coal miner and his family.

Arthur married Sarah Anne Bell (born 2nd April 1882 Kilburn) in 1905 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they lived at Edwinstowe House, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire.

In the 1911 census Arthur is living at 101 Station Road, Shirebrook, he is 31 yrs old and is a hotel barman, he is living with his wife Sarah 30 yrs.

Commencing 9th June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Arthur Hope enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was taken a prisoner of war and died of sickness on 5th July 1918, he is buried at Glageon Communal Cemetery, France
