John William Holmes was born on 11th September 1892 at Cossall, he was the son of Emily Barnett (formerly Holmes née Selby) of Newstead Street Maribyrnong Victoria Australia and the late John Richard Fritchely Holmes.

His father John Richard Fritchley Holmes was born in 1886 at Whittington, Derbyshire, he died in 1892 aged 26 yrs his death was recorded in the Basford Registration district, his mother Emily Selby was born in 1864 at Lincoln, she died in 1939 at Victoria, Australia aged 75 yrs. they were married on 9th January 1889 at Weeford, Staffordshire,

Following the death of her husband John Richard Fritchley Holmes his mother re married Charles Henry Barnett on 9th January 1899 at Boston, he was born in 1868 at Boston, he died in 1917 at Melbourne Australia,

In the 1911 census the family are living at 60 Castle Street, Boston, Charles Henry Bennett 43 yrs a bricklayer is living with his wife Emily Barnett 45 yrs a shop keeper and her children, Ivy Barnett 11 yrs a scholar, Charles Barnett 9 yrs and Ada Barnett 5 yrs.

In 1915 the family emigrated to Ascot Vale, Marlbymong, Victoria, Australia.

In the 1911 census , John William Holmes is 18 yrs single a gardener, he is boarding at 14 Buryhley Lane, Stamford, he is living with George Thomas Bell 35 yrs a brewers labourer and his family.

Military history

Private John Willam Holmes enlisted at Spalding whilst residing at Marlbymong, Victoria, Australia, he served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 8th January 1916 at sea whilst being evacuated from Gallipoli, he is buried at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
