Owen John Hicks was born in 1890 at Devonport he was the son of James Hicks a ship painter and Emily Hicks, née Jenkins of 29 Levans Road, Devonport.
His father James was born in 1864 at Devonport, his mother Emily Jenkins was born in 1865 also at Devonport, they were married in 1883 at Stoke Damerel, Devon they went on to have 11 children.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 29 Levans Road, Devonport, James 47 yrs is a ship painter, he is living with his wife Emily 46 yrs and their children, Mable 19 yrs a domestic maid, Ruby 17 yrs, Emily 15 yrs, Arthur 12 yrs, Bertie 9 yrs, Gladys 7 yrs and Harold 3 years old.
In the same 1911 census Own John Hicks has joined the Army and is living in barracks at Lichfield, he is 21 yrs and is serving with the 2nd battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
Owen married Mary Elizabeth Somers (born 15th June 1892) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Litchfield registration district, they had a daughter Ruby Maud Hicks (born before wedlock) on 1st March 1912. They lived at 20 Married Quarters, Chilwell, Nottingham.
Commencing 6th September 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 16 shillings a week.
Sergeant Owen John Hicks enlisted at Devonport whilst residing at Ford, near Devonport, he served with the 2nd battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st October 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.
