John Hennessey was born in 1882 at Nottingham,
He married his wife Mary Theresa Frisby (born 10th August 1882) on 30th May 1903 at St Phillips Church, Nottingham.
They lived at 22 Randolph Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, and had two children, William Henry born 22nd September 1905 and Doris Louisa born 23rd June 1910; both born in Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family is living at 79 Carlton Road, Nottingham and are shown as John 29 yrs a fruiter, who is living with his wife Mary Theresa 28 yrs and their 2 children William Henry 5 yrs and Doris Louisa 9 months.
Commencing 2nd December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Sergeant John Hennessey, enlisted in Nottingham on 24th March 1915 giving his address as 22 Randolph Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham he was 33 yrs and 4 months of age and he was a clerk. he served with 2nd Company. 17th Division Train, Army Service Corps. He was promoted to Corporal on 1st January 1916 and to Sergeant on 11th September 1917.
He embarked from Southampton on 13th July 1915, disembarking the following day at La Harve.
He died of wounds, a gunshot wound to his back on 27th May 1918 at No 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital at Doullens. According to one of the family notices, this was accidental, but his service record states that it was in action. He is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 2.
In memoriam published on 27th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“HENNESSEY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Sergt. J. Hennessey, accidentally killed in France May 27th, 1918. – Ever in our thoughts. – Wife, children Doris, Willie.
“HENNESSEY. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear friend Willie Hennessey, killed May 27th, 1918. Never will his memory fade. – Polly.”
