Family history

Joseph Goddard was born in 1882 at Eckingham he was the son of Joel Goddard a coal miner hewer and Hannah Goddard née Richards,of Chesterfield,

His father Joel was born in 1856 at Chesterfield, his mother Hannah Richards was born in 1859 at Chesterfield they were married on 17th September 1877 at Chesterfield, they had 10 children sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood,

In the 1911 census his family are living at 3 Joels Row, Hipper Street, Chesterfield, Joel 54 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Anna 52 yrs and their son George Goddard 24 yrs single and a coal miner hewer.

Joseph was the husband of Emma Clifford (born 27th March 1879) they were married on 11th September 1901 atDerbyshire, and the father of Elsie Emma born 28th June 1903, Joel born 11th September 1905, Thomas born 8th April 1908, Lucy Ellen born 22nd September 1911 ,Clifford born 13th October 1913 and Joseph Henry born 15th May 1916.

In 1911 they lived at 45 West Lea Clowne Nottinghamshire, Joseph 30 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emma 31 yrs and their children, Elsie Emma 7 yrs, Joel 5 yrs and Thomas 3 yrs of age.

Commencing 7th January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week, at this date his widow was living at 8 The Woodlands, Langwith,

Military history

Lance Corporal Joseph Goddard enlisted at Chesterfield, whilt residing at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 29th August 1915, he was killed in action on 25th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the pres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium

His brother Benjamin Goddard Private 14321 served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment wasa killed in action on 24th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium. (he is not on this roll of honour)
