Edward Arthur Foulkes was born in 1891 at Grove, Retford, he was the son of John Richard a domestic coachman and Sarah Foulkes née Robinson of Grove Retford Nottinghamshire.

His father John Richard was born in 1861 at Smalley, his mother Sarah Robinson was born in 1864 at Asburneby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford registration District, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Grove Retford, John Richard 50 yrs is a domestic coarchman, he is living with his wife Sarah 47 yrs and their children, Frederick Albert 16 yrs a grocers assistant, Co-Operative, Selina Mary 13 yrs andHilda Mary 10 yrs of age.

His pension record card shows his mother Sarah Foulkes of Grove Retford, as his dependant.

Military history

Rifleman Edward Arthur Foulkes enlisted at Consett, Durham he served with the 2/8th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 22nd November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval France.
