William Fisher was born in 1897 at Maryport, Cumbeland, he was the son of William Edward, a ship broker and Jane Elizabeth Fisher née Clarke, of 15 Poplar Street, Reford,

His father William Edward was born in 1870 at Maryport, Cumberland, his mother Jane Elizabeth Clarke was born in 1872 at Maryport, they were married in 1893 at Cockermouth, Cemberland, they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Lawson Street, Maryport, William Edward 40 yrs is a ship broker, he is living with his wife Jane Elizabeth 38 yrs and their children, Amy 17 yrs no occupation, Jesse 16 yrs a scholar, William 14 yrs scholar, David 12 yrs a scholar, Dorothy 6 yrs a scholar, Lillian 6 yrs a scholar and Robert Edward 3 yrs.

His pension record card shows his dependant as his mother Elizabeth Fisher of 15 Poplar Street, Retford.

Military history

Private William Fisher enlisted at Sheffield whilst residing at Retford, he served with the 6th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 4th August 1917, he is buried at Brandhoek New Militray Cemetery No 3, Belgium.
