James Garfield Fernley was born in 1891 at Stockport Cheshire, he was the son of John William a furniture dealer and later a jobbing gardener, and Elizabeth Fernley née Pott of Marple, Cheshire,
His father John William was born in 1863 at Marple, his mother Elizabeth Pott was born in 1864 at Marple, they were married on 6th August 1884 at All Saints Church, Marple, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 83 Church Lane, Marple, John William 48 yrs is a jobbing gardener he is living with is wife Elizabeth 45 yrs and their 10 children.
In the same 1911 census we find that James Garfield has lef the family home, he is living at 10 Siddal Street, Oldham, he is 19 yrs of age and a shop assistant, he is living with George Wiiliam Read 50 yrs a general labourer and his family.
James Garffield was the husband of Rebecca Welch (born 18th October 1887) they were married on 3rd July 1913 at Primitive Methedist Church Market Street, Stockport, they had the following children, May born 9th May 1914, James Arthur born 28th May 1917 and Walter Claude born 28th May 1917, the family lived at North Muskham.
Commencing 19th May 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.
Rebecca never remarried and died in 1974 aged 86.
Private James Garfield enlisted at Manchester whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 17th battalion Lancashire Regisment, he died of wounds on 1st November 1918 he is buried in Kezelberg Military Cemetery (grave ref. I.C.19).
