Family history

Alec born Alledge Dawson was born on 8th November 1896 at Dunston, Lincolonshire he was the son of Joshua a bricklayer and Josephine Dawson of Lock Cottage Osberton Worksop Nottinghamshire.

His father Joshua was born in 1868 at Branston, Lincolnshire, his mother Josephine was born in 1861 at Riseholme, Lincolnshire they were married C1888, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or ealy childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Dunston Lincolnshire, Joshua 42 yrs a bricklayer is living with his wife Josephine and their childrenn Josephine 11 yrs, Norman 9 yrs and Elizabeth 3 yrs of age.

In the same 1911 census we find that Alledge 14 yrs of age a pony driver in a coal mine is living with his grandmother Martha Dawson a widow and her son Septimus 25 yrs a coal miner, the family are living at 41 Green Lane, Woodlands, Doncaster.

His mother was later living at the Red Lion Inn, Dunston

Military history

Able seaman Alec Dawson enlisted on 2nd june 1915 into the Royal Navy, he was drafted to the Mediteranean Expeditionary Force on 5th December 1915, he joned the Hawke Bn RN Division at Mudros on 7th February 1916. He was killed in action on 3rd February 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
