Family history

Horace Cook was born in 1894 at Spalford near Newark he was the son of John a farm labourer and Ellen Cook née Goddard and the brother of William Henry,John Thomas, George, Arthur, Joseph, Annie Elizabeth, Rose Ellen,Florence, Ernest Goddard, Robert and Elsie May

His father John was born in 1850 at Aubourn, Lincolnshire, his mother Ellen Goddard was born in 1856 at Heighing, Lincolnshire, they were married on 13th June 1876 at Washingborough, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 11 children,

In the 1911 census the family lived at Springwooad Farm, Thorney, Newark. John Cook 61 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 55 yrs and their children, Ernest G 14 yrs a day boy on a farm, Elsie May 12 yrs and their grandaughter Daisy May 6 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Horace Cook enlisted at Lincoln he served with the 1/4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died on 1 July 1917 and was buried in Loos British Cemetery (grave ref. XIX.B.13).

CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Peace perfect peace'

His brother Driver 209014 Ernest Goddard Cook served with the 455th Filed Company, Royal Engineers, he died of wounds on 2nd November 1918, he is buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France.
