Family history

Charles Collin was born in 1890 at Claypole, Lincolnshire , he was the grandson of Ann Collin of Barnby Lane Claypole, near Newark who is shown on his pension record card as his dependant.

His mother was Catherine Birch Collin born 1862 at Claypole, who went on to marry in 1896 at Stamford, Joseph Dawson Towell born 1859 at Empingham, Rutland, they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Ketton,Stamford, Lincolnshire Joseph Towell head of the family 52 yrs is a shepherd, he is living with his wife Catherine Towell 42 yrs and their children, Annie Collinn 17 yrs and 7 children all with the surname of Towell they state they have been married for 14 years and have had 9 children, one of whom died in early infancy or childhood.

In the 1911 census Charles is residing at Claypole Mill, Newark, he is shown as being 21 yrs single and a waggoner on a farm, he is living with Fred Bellamy 39 yrs a farm bailiff and his family.

Military history

Private Charles Collin attested on 11th December 1915 at Newark, giving his address as Claypole, Lincolnshire , he was 26 yrs and 5 months old, he was a labourer, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 1st August 1916 and posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 17th November 1916 and was reported missing in action on 14th August 1917, he was later reported killed in action on this date. His is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.
