Sydney William Clements was born in 1895 at Upton, he was the son of the late Joseph Douglas Clements a coachman and Annie Clements of Upton
He was the husband of Rebecca Ellen Landin born 24th April 1896 they were married on 30th December 1915 at St Faiths Church, North Wilford, and the father of Albert Sydney Clements born 1st December 1916, they lived at 56 Bridge Street, Derby.
Commencing 16th December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 8 pence a week.
Corporal Sydney William Clements enlisted on 29th May 1915 at Nottingham whilst residing at Upton Southwell, he was 20 yrs and 9 months old and was a farm labourer, he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He trained as a machine gunner and went to France 6th March 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal 2nd October 1916 and promoted Corporal 10th March 1917. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his chest 29th June 1917 and was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Peiter de Connick, 10th August 1917. He was treated at reading war hospital, 11th August 1917 to the 1st October 1917. He returned to France 4th December 1917 and was killed in action21st March 1916 whilst holding the line near Sorrell Wood/Longeuval, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
