Geoffrey Arthur Vernon Butt was born in 1894 at Ilkeston, he was baptised on 6th June 1894 at St Marys Church, Ilkeston, he was the son of Arthur Butt a head schoolmaster and Eugenie Butt née Read of 'Brook House' Edingley Southwell Nottinghamshire.

His father Arthur was born in 1861 at Ilkeston his mother Fanny Eugine Read was born in 1856 at Bromsgrove,Worcestershire, they were married on 12th December 1886 at St Marys Church, Ilkeston, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 was to die ininfancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at The Larklands, Ilkeston, Arthur 50 yrs is head school master, he is living withhis wife Fanny Eugine 55 yrs and their children, Josephine Maria 15 yrs a scholar, Dora Vivienne, 13 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Geoffrey Arthur Vernon Butt enlisted at Bury St Edmunds whilst residing at Beeston, Nottingham, he served with the 9th Bn Queen's Royal Lancers landing in France on 28th November 1914 he was killed in action on 21st November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, Somme,
