Family history

Robert Granville Bennett was born on 16th August 1893 at Swinefleet, Yorkshire, he was baptised on 5th October 1893 at St John's parish church at Goole, he was the son of Herbert Thomas Bennett a merchant and farmer and Mary Bennett néé Taylor of 'Hafodty' Ruddington Nottinghamshire.

His father Herbert Thomas was born in 1864 at Adlington, Yorkshire, his mother Mary Taylor was born in 1863 at Liverpool, they were married in 1885 at Goole, Yorkshire, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Porter Grange, Goole Herbert Thomas 47 yrs is a merchant and farmer he is living with his wife Mary 47 yrs and their children, Robert Granville 17 yrs assisting in his fathers business, Marion Bennet 15 yrs a scholar, Herbert Thomas 6 yrs a scholar, John Taylor Bennett 6 yrs of age, also living with the family are 2 female servants.

Military history

Second Lieutenant Robert Granville Bennett enlisted on the 1st September 1914 as a Private into the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment (a Pals Battalion known initially as the Hull Commercials) He was later commidioned and reported to the 9th Bn. King's Own Yorkshirle Light Infantry. on the 21st July 1917. They were holding positions close to the Hindenberg Line at Longpre, north-west of Amiens. he was killed in action on 4th October 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
