Family history

John Edward Scrivener was born in 1885 at Finsbury Park, London. he married Emily Hayes (born 24th April 1886) in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 12 Leighton Street, Nottingham and later 19 Leeshill Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.

Commencing 27th June 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.

Military history

Private John Edward Scrivener enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 11th November 1914 He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel ref. Panel 8 and 12).

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 17 December 1914: 'Scrivener. Killed in action November 11th in France, Private John Edward Scrivener, 5th (sic) Northumberland Fusiliers, of 19 Leeshill Street, postman of the city, husband of Emily Scrivener, age 26(?).'
