Charles Riley was born in 1893 at Notingham, he was the son of John a plumber and Mary Riley née Harrop of 16 Thurgarton Street, Sneinton,Nottingham; He had three brothers, Joe, Will and Tom.
His father John was born in 1865 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Harrop was born in 1864 at Eastwood, the were married in 1888 at Nottingham, they had 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Thurgarton Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, John 45 yrs is a plumber, he is living with his wife Mary 46 yrs and their sons Thomas 22 yrs a postman and Joseph 13 yrs a scholar
Charles was the husband of Elsie Barker of Prudential Buildings, Queen Street, Nottingham they were married on 20th May 1916 at St Thomas Church, Nottingham.
Lance Bombardier Charles Riley enlisted at Nottingham he served with 'C' Bty.178th brigade Royal Field Artillery he was killed in action on 1st December 1917, he is buried at Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. IV.O.6).
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 17 December 1917: 'Riley. Killed in action December 1st 1917, Bombardier Charles Riley RFA, 16 Thurgaton Street, Sneinton, (late postman). Wife Elsie (nee Barber), mother, father, brother Joe and Will (wounded in action), brother Tom.'
