Harry Widdowson was born in 1885 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Widdowson of 14 Chatby Street, Dernaby Place, Rotherham. His siblings were Fred and Florence.
Harry married Lilly Hargate on 20th April 1908 at St John’s Church, Rotherham, they went on to have 4 children, Evelyn born 1909, Clara born 1910, Ivy born 1912 and Edward born 1915.
In the 1911 census Harry and his family are boarders at 63 Orchard Street, Rotherham, they are living with Edward Nicklen 49 yrs a labourer, Harry is 26 yrs of age and is a labourer, he is boarding with his wife Lily 24 yrs and their children, Evelyn 1 year and 9 months of age and Clara 7 months of age.
Private Harry Widdowson enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Rotherham, he enlisted on 1st December 1913, giving his age as 20 yrs and 345 days, he was a coal miner, his next of kin was his father Walter of 14 Chatby St Dernaby Place, Rotherham, he was posted to the York and Lancaster Regiment. He embarked on 27th July 1915, he died of wounds on 12th September 1916 and is buried at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France.
