Lewis Whitehead was born in 1895 at Annesley, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of the late James Whitehead a coal miner and the late Annie Elizabeth née Poxon of 136 New Annesley.
His father James was born in 1853 at Darnall, Yorkshire he died in 1909 aged 56 yrs, his mother Ann Elizabeth Poxon was born in 1856 at Watnall she died in 1917 aged 61 yrs, they were married n 10th November 1873 at All Saints Church, Annesley they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 136 New Annesley, Annie 55 yrs is a widow, she is living with her children, Fred 25 yrs a coal miner contractor, Sidney 19 yrs a coal miner, Lewis 17 yrs a coal miner, Lucy 21 yrs no occupation listed,.
Lewis’s pension record card shows a daughter Hilda Whitehead Weston born 26th May 1915 listed, her guardian being Grace Weston of 136 Annesley Woodhouse, who was awarded a pension of 5 shillings commencing 4th April 1917.
Corporal Lewis Whitehead enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Annesley, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 27th August 1915 and died of wounds on 2nd October 1916, he was buried at Dernancourt Community Cemetery, Extension, France.
