Family history

George Edward Lee was born in 1895 at Kirkby in Ashfield, he was the son of Thomas a coal miner contractor and Harriett Elizabeth Lee née Hilton of 70 Annesley, Nottinghamshire.

His father Thomas was born in 1864 at Kirkby , his mother Harriett Elizabeth Hilton was born in 1866 in Norfolk, they were married in 1887 at Bury Lancashire, they went on to have 14 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 96 New Annesley, Nottinghamshire, Thomas 47 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Harriett Elizabeth 45 yrs and their children, William Arthur 20 yrs a coal miner loader, John Charles 18 yrs a coal miner hewer, George Edward 16 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Clara May 15 yrs, no occupation listed, Albert Anthony 14 yrs a golf caddy, Harriett Emma 12 yrs a scholar, Joseph Ernest 11 yrs scholar, Walter 8 yrs and Barbara Ellen 6 yrs of age

Military history

Private George Edward Leen enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 4th battalion Grenadier Guards, he died of wounds on 17th September 1916 and is buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, France.
