Family history

John William Getliff was born in 1891 at Annesley, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of John a colliery weigh clerk and Emma Getlifff née Aldridge of 16 Reform Street, Annesley Woodhouse.

His father John Getliff was born in 1865 at Thurmaston, Lancashire, his mother Emma Aldridge was born in 1868 at Swadlincote, Derbyshire, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Ashby De La Zouch registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 18 The Grove, Annesley John 46 yrs is a colliery weigh clerk, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their children, John William 20 yrs a colliery banksman, Charles Albert 12 yrs a scholar, Ernest Harold 7 yrs of age, also living with the family is Mary Munss 16 yrs an adopted daughter and Lucy Munns 11 yrs an adopted daughter and also Hannah Aldridge 63 yrs his mother in law.

Military history

Private John William Getliff enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Annesley, he served with the 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards, he was killed in action on 27th March 1918, having no know grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
