Wiliam Wardle was born on 13th April 1886 at Nottingham he was the son of Arthur Wardle a lace maker and Rhoda Wardle née Sherwin and the brother of Charles Herbert, Sherwin, Thomas, Walter, Edgar, Bernard, Leonard, Maria, Ethel and Thurza Wardle.
His father Arthur was born in 1858 at Radford, his mother Rhoda Sherwin was born in 1856 at Saxilby, they were married in 1874 at Radford, they went on to have 11 children.
In 1891 they lived at The Black Horse, Grimston, Melton Mowbray where Arthur was the licensee.
In the 1911 census the family are still living at Grimston, Arthur 53 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Rhoda 55 yrs and their children, Leonard 19 yrs a farm labourer, Thurza 17 yrs assisting in her fathers business
In the same 1911census William lived with his brother Charles and family at 12 Alderney Street Lenton Nottingham. He is 24 yrs and is a policeman.
He attested 31/5/1902 standing 5' 5" and weighing 124 lbs. He gave his age as 18 years 10 months but he was actually 14 and ten months (CWGC, census data and Free BMD).
He was transferred to the Reserve in 1910 and re-engaged 14/3/1914. He embarked 17/3 1915 and was killed in action 13th March 1915, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Panel 11.
His brother Private Edgar Wardle, 2nd (Garrison) Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (formerly Royal Sussex Regiment), died at Karachi on 30th January 1918. Buried in Karachi Cemetery, he is commemorated on the Dehli Memorial.
Born in Nottingham, he was living at Selsey, Sussex, at the time of his enlistment at Chichester. He was the husband of Florence Louisa Wardle, of 21, Conley Road, Church Road, Willesden, London.
