Ernest Lane was the son of William Lane and Eliza [Homer] Wakelam who married in the Radford registration district in 1878. Their children included: Eliza Ann (b.1879), Florence (b.1883), Ernest (b.1885), Leonard (b.1892) and William Harold (b.1897). The Lane family lived at: 4 Taylor’s Yard, Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1881]; 10 Stansfield Terrace, Stansfield Street, Radford [C.1891 & C.1901]; 22a Stansfield Street, Radford [C.1911]. Eliza Lane died at Nottingham in early 1911, aged 51. William Lane, a gas stoker working for Nottingham Corporation, probably died at Nottingham, aged 69, in 1929.
He enlisted at Derby; at the time of the 1911 census he was serving with the 1st Bn. [King's Own] Yorkshire Light Infantry based in Hong Kong; killed in action; buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, Nord, France.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 February 1915: 'Lane. Killed in action October 27th, Lance Corporal E Lane, KOYLI, eldest son of William and the late Eliza Lane, aged 30.'
