Ernest Lane was the son of William Lane and Eliza [Homer] Wakelam who married in the Radford registration district on 25th December 1876, Their children included: Eliza Ann (b.1879), Florence (b.1883), Ernest (b.1885), Leonard (b.1892) and William Harold (b.1897).
His father William was born n 1861 at Arnold, his mother Eliza Horner Wakelam was born in 1859 at Dudley, Worcestershire,
The Lane family lived at: 4 Taylor’s Yard, Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1881]; 10 Stansfield Terrace, Stansfield Street, Radford [C.1891 & C.1901]; 22a Stansfield Street, Radford [C.1911]. Eliza Lane died at Nottingham in early 1911, aged 51.
In the 1911 census William Lane, 50 yrs w widower a gas stoker working for Nottingham Corporation, probably died at Nottingham, aged 69, in 1929.he is living with his sons Leonard 18 yrs awarehouse clerk and William Harold 13 yrs a scholar.
He enlisted at Derby; at the time of the 1911 census he was serving with the 1st Bn. [King's Own] Yorkshire Light Infantry based in Hong Kong; killed in action on 27th October 1914 and he is buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, Nord, France.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 February 1915: 'Lane. Killed in action October 27th, Lance Corporal E Lane, KOYLI, eldest son of William and the late Eliza Lane, aged 30.'
