James Ivor Holroyd was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of James an estate agent and Lizzy Holroyd née North of 393 Lenton Boulevard, later 18 Barrack Lane and then 236 Derby Road (all Nottingham). He was the brother of Alice Muriel, Gwendoline Lizzy and William Norman Holroyd.
His father James was born in 1865 at Radford, he was an estate agent with offices in Front Street Arnold and Houndsgate Nottingham, his mother Lizzy North was born in 1861 at Nottingham, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham, they had 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Harlaxton House, 18 Barrack Lane, Nottingham, James Holyroyd 46 yrs is an estate agent, he is lving with his wife Lizzy 50 yrs and their children, Alice Muriel 22 yrs no occupation listed, Gwendoline Lilly 19 ys no ccupation listed, William Norman 17 yrs an estate agens clerk, James Ivor 14 yrs a scholar, also living with the family are 2 female servants.
Private James Ivor Holroyd enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/28th Regiment Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 30th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot. Memorial.
An official report described how 'A Company of the Artists' Rifles were wiped out when attacking Source Trench (which lay near a little stream then in flood called the Paddebeek) where enemy machine guns picked their targets among men held in the knee high suck of the mud.'
