Joseph Harold Johnson was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of Joseph a toy manufacturer and Louisa Johnson née Garner of Seeley Road and later 25 Derby Grove Nottingham and the brother of Mabel, Florence, Elsie and Stanley Johnson.
His father Joseph Johnson was born in 1859 at Nottingham, his mother Louisa Garner was born in 1859 at Nottingham, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 8 Seeley Road, Nottingham, Joseph 52 yrs is a toy manuafacturer he is living with his wife Louisa 52 yrs and their children, Mabel 22 yrs no occupation, Florence Mary21 yrs no occupation, Elsie J Maud Elsie 19 yrs a music scholar, Joseph Harold 17 yrs assisting in his fathers business,
his brother Stanley Johnson served as a Second-Lieutenant with 2/7th Sherwood Foresters and also with 'D' Company 8th North Staffordshire Regiment.
Joseph Harold emigraeted to Canada priro to the 'Great War'
Private Joseph Harold Johnson enlisted in Canada on 22nd July 1915, he was a farm labourer he was originally a member of 45th Manitoba Rangers he embarked on 13th March 1916 who arrived in Liverpool from Canada on 25th March 1916 . He landed in France on 24th May 1916 with 38 officers and 1,119 other ranks. The unit was, however, broken up to provide reinforcements for other units and that must have been when Johnson was sent to 52nd Battalion. He was killed during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on the Somme and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 6 October 1916: 'Johnson. Killed in action September 15th, Joseph Harold Johnson, Canadians, elder son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Johnson, Seeley Road, Nottingham.'
