Family history

Harry was born in 1893 in Retford and was the son of Richard a general labourer and Mary Ann Dexter, (nee Brett) of 7A, East St., Retford, Notts. They also have a son James and two daughters Harrriet and Lottie

His father Richard was boorn in 1856 at Bennington, he died in in 1902 aged 46 yrs, his mother Mary Ann Brett was bornm in 1859 at Gainsborough, they were married in 1878 at East Retford, they had 8 children.

In the 1901 census the family are living at 30 Canal Street, Retford at this time Harry is 8 years of age.

By the 1911 census Richard has died and Mary Ann has remarried (on 7th November 1903 to Herbert Taylor, and become Mary Ann Taylor and is living with her husband Herbert Taylor and her 4 children at Ridgeway Building Retford , Harry is now 18 years of age and a general labourer.

Military history

Private Harry Dexter enlisted on 26th August 1914 at Retford, giving his age as 21 yrs and 100 days, he initially served with service number 13372 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he then served with Cyclist Company 11th division, Army Cyclist Corps .His medal card shows the first theatre of War he entered was the Balkans and went to Gallipoli , the date given is 6th August 1915 . He died on 8th August 1915 of pneumonia and he is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery grave reference C XIX 1
