William was born at Arnold in 1895 at Arnold, he was the son of Jesse a frame work knitter and Harriett Forrest née Eddishaw of 31 James Street, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, with whom he was living prior to enlisting in the army.
His father Jessie was born in 1858 his mother Harriett Eddishaw was born in 1863 both were born in Arnold, they were married on 20th March 1881 at St Mary's church, Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children.
In the 1911 census his whole family are living with his brother in law Stephen Sneap at Gordon Villas, High Street ,Arnold, he is shown as being 16 yrs and a coal miner his father Jesse is shown as a framework knitter.
He was educated at the Robert Mellors School Arnold.
He enlisted at Nottingham into the Sherwood Foresters his County Regiment, with regimental number 4791. However, at some time later he was transferred into the 10th Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment He was killed during trench shelling on 26th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated at the Thiepval memorial on the Somme
