Thomas Cooke was born in 1899 at Arnold, he was baptised on 12th February 1899 at St Marys Church, Arnold, his family were living at West Street, Arnold at this time, he was the son of the late William a colliery banksman and Annie Cooke née Rawson of 39 James Street, Arnold, Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1876 he died in 1918 42 yrs his mother was also born in 1876 both were born in Arnold, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children sadly 2 were to died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 39 James Street, Arnold, William 35 yrs is a colliery banksman, he is living with his wife Annie 35 yrs and their children, Thomas 12 yrs a scholr, Annie 11 yrs a scholar, Evelyn 7 yrs of age, Ethel 6 yrs of age George 3 yrs of age and Arthur 5 months old.
Private Thomas Cooke enlisted on 14th November 1916 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 3 months, he was living at 39 James Street, Arnold giving his occupation as a motor engineer, he was called up on 15th February 1917 and posted to the Durham Light Infantry.
He embarked from Southampton on 6th December 1917 arriving at Le Harve the same day. He was wounded in action on 28th March 1918 and died from his wounds the following day at No 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital. he is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery extension No 1, France.
